As we approach World Bee Day on May 20th, it’s the perfect time to shine a light on those who are making a difference in beekeeping and conservation efforts. We’re thrilled to spotlight one of our own members, Jonna Sanders from KSKJ Life Lodge #257 in Washington D.C. Jonna and her family own AŽ Hives North America,which produces traditional Slovenian AŽ beehives.
What are Slovenian AŽ hives?
Slovenian AŽ Hives, also known as AŽ beehives or Slovenian bee houses, have been gaining popularity worldwide due to their innovative design and positive impact on beekeeping practices. These hives, inspired by traditional Slovenian beekeeping methods, prioritize the well-being of bees while also promoting sustainable beekeeping practices.
Jonna has been at the forefront of this movement, passionately advocating for the adoption of Slovenian AŽ Hives as a more bee-friendly alternative to conventional beehives. Their company not only produces these hives but also provides educational resources and support for beekeepers looking to transition to this eco-friendly approach.
Jonna recently returned from a trip to Slovenia with Dr. Adam Ingrao, a prominent U.S. Veteran-Entomologist, and the founder of U.S. non-profit Heroes to Hives, where they met their counterparts at Slovenia’s Agricultural Ministry, the University of Ljubljana, as well as the Beekeeping Academy of Slovenia (ČAS) and the Slovenian Beekeeping Association (ČzS).
Jonna and Dr. Ingrao are working collaboratively to establish training methodologies for 11,000 U.S. Veteran-Beekeepers, who will now have the opportunity to train on the adaptive Slovenian AŽ beehive.
In addition, Jonna is launching a 501c3 non-profit, Project Bee Strong & the American Center for Young Beekeepers, which will be starting up soon in New England. The goal of the non-profit is to train veterans to become beekeepers and bring them into K-12 schools to teach the youngest generation about the importance of bees and other pollinators.

May 2nd marks the anniversary of the first day that life insurance became available in the U.S. The observance also brings awareness of the benefits of life insurance.
KSKJ Days Lodge #2 – Join Hands Day
Volunteers will meet at Sunny Hill Nursing Home in Joliet, IL to assist in Spring vegetation clean up and new flower planting. Our volunteers interact and work with residents to beautify the grounds for outdoor summer enjoyment for residents and their visiting family members. Volunteers are encouraged to bring gloves and gardening tools.

World Bee Day
May 20th is marked as World Bee Day because it coincides with the birthday of Anton Janša, a pioneer beekeeper from Slovenia born in 1734.
Marija Pomagaj Mass & Reception
A special mass will be held at St. Joseph Church in Joliet, IL at 6:30 p.m. in honor of our patron saint Marija Pomagaj, and a reception will follow with snacks and refreshments. Traditional Slovenian music will be played. The event is being hosted by KSKJ Life Lodges #2, #29 and #143.
Marija Pomagaj Feast Day
Each year, May 24th is celebrated as the feast day of Marija Pomagaj, the patron saint of Slovenians. She is also known as Our Lady of Brezje and Mary Help of Christians. She is the Patroness of the Slovenian people and Protector of the Slovenian heritage.
Memorial Day
We honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Their courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
The KSKJ Life Home Office and Customer Service department will be closed May 27th.
